dc.description.abstractDas Oeuvre des schottischen Dichters und Erzählers George MacDonald wird in der Regel im Hinblick auf seine christliche Aussage betrachtet. Seine Bedeutung im Kontext des ihm zeitgenössischen Symbolismus ist indessen so gut wie gar nicht untersucht worden. MacDonald ist jedoch ein symbolistischer Autor von Rang. Sowohl seine so genannten realistischen als auch seine fantastischen Werke kreisen um die zentralen Themenbereiche des Symbolismus: Liebe, Tod, Traum und Ideal. Künstlerische Techniken des Symbolismus wie Parabelstrukturen, metaphysisch orientierte Farbepitheta und symbolismuskonforme Erzählmittel wie Andeutung und Verschweigen charakterisieren sein Gesamtwerk. Darüber hinaus ist es von der Motivik einer labyrintischen Wirklichkeitserfahrung gekennzeichnet, ebenso wie von der Präsenz eines traumhaften Ideals, Aspekten, die auf die Symbolismusrezeption des 20. Jahrhunderts hinweisen. MacDonald, der die ihm zeitgenössische Literatur und Malerei intensiv rezipiert hat, sollte nicht länger als ein von seiner Zeit isolierter Schriftsteller angesehen werden.
dc.description.abstractGeorge MacDonald's work is usually discussed with regards to its Christian message, while its importance in the context of the contemporaneous movement of symbolism has been practically ignored. However; MacDonald is indeed an outstanding symbolist author. Both his so-called realist works and his fantastic writings revolve around the central themes of symbolism: love, death, dreams, and the ideal. His whole work is characterized by typically symbolist artistic techniques, such as parabolic structures, metaphysically connotated colour epithets and narrative strategies like allusion and concealment. In addition, it is informed by the motifs o f a labyrinthine experience of reality as well as by the presence of a dream-like ideal-both aspects pointing to the reception of symbolism in the 20th century. MacDonald, who intensely took note of the literature and art of his contemporaries, should no longer be regarded as a writer isolated from his time.
