The central focus of action in Lewis’s unfinished novel The Dark Tower is a tower which is at the same time a temple, a castle, a library, and the start­ing and finishing point of time travels. It is remarkable that the motif of the tower also appears as a central element in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and that there, too, towers function as centres of knowledge, power, and as start­ing points for (mental) travels. In both cases the motif of the tower can be linked with the medieval tradition of the turris sapientiae; Lewis states ex­plicitly that his model for the tower in the Dark Tower was the new Library in Cambridge. The clearest parallel, however, to The Dark Tower is prob­ably David Lindsay’s Voyage to Arcturus, which Lewis appreciated, and in which, again, a tower is the starting point for an interdimensional journey. There are other ways, in addition, in which Lewis’s thought experiment in time travelling is connected with Lindsay’s Voyage to Arcturus. Like in the other parts of the Ransom trilogy (of which The Dark Tower was meant to be a part), metaphysical and theological problems constitute a deeper level of meaning. In The Dark Tower these are, specifically, the questions of time, reincarnation, and eternity.

Zentraler Schauplatz in Lewis' Romanfragment The Dark Tower aus dem Jahre 1938/39 ist ein Turm, der zugleich Tempel, Zwingburg, Bibliothek und Ausgangs- bzw. Endpunkt einer Zeitreise ist. Es ist bemerkenswert, daß das Motiv des Turmes auch in Tolkiens Lord of the Rings eine zentrale Be­deutung besitzt und auch hier Türme als Zentren von Wissen, Macht und als Ausgangspunkt von (Gedanken-) Reisen fungieren. Dies wird erklär­lich, wenn man bedenkt, daß das Motiv in der Tradition des turris sapi­entiae steht - Lewis nennt als architektonisches Vorbild des Turmes in The Dark Tower ausdrücklich die New Library in Cambridge. Die klarste mo­tivische Parallele zu The Dark Tower bietet aber vielleicht David Lind­says Roman Voyage to Arcturus, den Lewis sehr schätzte und in dem ebenfalls ein Turm zum Ausgangspunkt für eine interdimensionale Reise wird. Lewis Gedankenexperiment zum Thema Zeitreise in The Dark Tower knüpft auch in anderer Weise an Lindsays Voyage to Arcturus an. Wie in den übrigen Werken der Ransom-Trilogie, als deren Bestandteil das Frag­ment ursprünglich gedacht war; begründen metaphysische und theologische Fragestellungen eine tiefere Erzähl- und Interpretationsebene. In The Dark Tower sind dies die Fragen nach Zeit, Reinkarnation und Ewigkeit.
