This essay compares the representations of capitalist exploitation of children’s culture in Child’s Play (1988) and Child’s Play (2019). It claims that the shift from commodity capitalism to surveillance capitalism informs a change in the depicted child-doll relationship. 1988’s Chucky, a magically possessed doll, looks to the child as a receptacle to fill, thus illustrating the incentive of commodity capitalism to secure the child as a force in consumption. In contrast, 2019’s Chucky, now a computerised smart toy, regards the child as a reservoir of behavioural data for the extraction of data products. This change highlights a new system of exploitation in the production and dissemination of ubiquitous Internet technologies.

Der Artikel vergleicht Child’s Play (1988) und Child’s Play (2019) anhand der Verhandlung kapitalistischer Ausbeutungsprozesse von kindlichen Lebenswelten. Die Entwicklung von produktbasiertem Kapitalismus hin zu Überwachungskapitalismus vollzieht sich in den Filmen anhand einer sich verändernden Kind-Puppe-Beziehung. Während der frühere Chucky als eine auf magische Weise animierte Spielpuppe sein Kind als befüllbares Behältnis ansieht, und damit die Einstellung eines produktbasierten Kapitalismus abbildet, der das Kind als Konsumenten zu vereinnahmen sucht, betrachtet der neuere Chucky, nun als ein computerbasiertes ‚smartes‘ Spielzeug, das Kind als Reservoir extrahierbarer und kommodifizierbarer persönlicher Daten. Dieser Wandel schärft den Blick für eine neue, systematische Ausbeutungsstruktur in der Herstellung und Implementierung ubiquitärer Internettechnologien.
