Es spielt von 305 bis 337 und bewegt sich vom äußersten Westen bis zum äußersten Osten des Römischen Reiches, das Konstantin vereinigte. Die Hauptereignisse sind: der Sieg an der Milvischen Brücke, der die Wende einleitete: die Kirche wird nicht mehr verfolgt, sondern privilegiert; das Konzil von Nizäa: die Kirche klärt gegen Arius ihre Lehre von Christus. Sayers verschweigt nicht die Fehler und Verbrechen Konstantins und stellt die immer noch aktuelle Problematik des Verhältnisses von Staat und Kirche, von Macht und Glaube dar. Der Artikel untersucht Entstehung, Rezeption, Quellen, Kontextualität und Kunstmittel des spannenden, amüsanten und nachdenklich machenden Werks. | |
| dc.description.abstract | Sayers's last dramatic work is her best. The action covers the time from 305 to 307; the scene moves without pause from Britain to Gaul, to Rome, to the Balcans, to Egypt, to Byzantium, to Nicomedia. The main events are the victory by the Milvian Bridge, the emergence of the Church from the status of a persecuted minority to a privileged and influential body, and the Council of Nicaea where the Church defined her doctrine of Christ. The shortcomings and crimes of Constantine are not ignored by Sayers, the relations between State and Church, Power and Faith - problems still disputed - are discussed. In this article genesis, reception, sources, intertextuality, technical skill and craftsmanship of this thrilling, amusing and thought-provoking play are discussed. | |
