"'I Don't Want to Be an Oddball':
Abstract
This article examines depictions of intellectual giftedness in children’s literature, focusing on the novel A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. It argues that high intelligence, as depicted in characters like Charles Wallace Murry, should be understood as a form of neurodiversity, akin to other forms of cognitive divergence. Through its fantastical elements, the narrative explores difference and marginalization, raising critical questions about the experiences of gifted individuals and the societal pressures they face. While L'Engle’s work is often celebrated for promoting individuality, this analysis reveals a more nuanced picture, especially when contrasting the journeys of Meg and Charles Wallace. Drawing on research from the fields of education, psychology, and literary studies, this article approaches L'Engle’s novel as both a space for questioning and a mirror of the intellectual and emotional challenges of those who do not conform to societal norms.
A Wrinkle in Time liegt.
