This essay will compare the Perelandra-Trilogy by C. S. Lewis to Pullmans His Dark Materials, the former of which can be regarded as a palimpsest to the latter. Especially the parallels between the hrossa-episode (Lewis) and the mulefa-episode (Pullman) will be investigated in this context. The similarities between the two stories, especially when they cannot be explained as genre-typical motifs in the field of fantasy fiction, are used by the two authors to transport opposing messages to the reader: whereas Lewis preaches the subordination to his Christ-representing Maleldil, Pullman supports human freedom and the evolutionary power which comes from chance. The reversed character constellation supports rather than weakens the similarities between the works.
