| dc.description.abstract | Der vorliegende Artikel untersucht die SF-Romane <i>The Sparrow</i> (1996) und <i>Children of God</i> (1998) der amerikanischen Autorin Mary Doria Russell, die mit dem Arthur C. Clarke und Kurd Lasswitz Preis ausgezeichnet wurden. Die Romane stellen die Kontaktaufnahme einer von Jesuiten geleiteten Mission mit Aliens des Planeten Rakhat sowie die dadurch ausgelösten individuellen Krisen und gesamtgesellschaftlichen Veränderungen dar. Doch die Auseinandersetzung mit ‘dem Anderen* bleibt nicht auf die Alien-Mensch-Problematik beschränkt. Auch die Beziehung des Menschen zu Gott wird an Hand der Extremerfahrung menschlichen Leids thematisiert. Russells Romane werden im Folgenden mit Bezug auf die Hiobsproblematik und dem Theodizeeproblem diskutiert. | |
| dc.description.abstract | The present article examines the SF novels <i>The Sparrow</i> (1996) and <i>Children of God</i> (1998) by the American author Mary Doria Russell, which won the Arthur C. Clarke and Kurd Lasswitz Awards. At the centre of these novels lies the first contact between members of a Jesuit mission and aliens from the planet Rakhat. This contact has fatal consequences for both parties. The novels depict the individual crises as well as the far-reaching social changes evoked by it. However, not only conflicts of humans and aliens are examined in the texts. The relationship between humans and God is also explored, focussing particularly on the problem of human suffering and undeserved pain. In the following, Russell's novels are discussed in relation to the Book of Job as well as to the problem of theodicy. | |
