Unter dieser Prämisse untersucht der vorliegende Beitrag, wie Maries Bruder Fritz im imaginativen Spiel mit dem Phantastischen in Kontakt tritt. Dabei wird sich zeigen, dass Fritz’ Imaginati-onskraft im Verlauf der Handlung an Grenzen stößt. Eine mögliche Erklärung für diese wiederholten Kollisionen mit dem Phantastischen ist die konstatierte Hartherzigkeit des Jungen, die durch sein militärisch-heroisches Männlichkeitsbild bestärkt und im Märchen kontrastiv zu Maries Barmherzigkeit vorgeführt wird.

In Hoffmann’s ‘Wirklichkeitsmärchen’ Nußknacker und Mausekönig, the relationship between the rational-empirical and the fantastic world can be understood as a duplicity that favours the concurrence of the imaginary and the fantastic in the fictional reality. Based on this premise, this article examines how Marie’s brother Fritz comes into contact with the fantastic in imaginative play. It will be shown that Fritz’s power of imagination reaches its limits in the course of the plot. One possible explanation for these repeated collisions with the fantastic is the boy’s hard-heartedness, which is strengthened by his militaristic-heroic image of masculinity and is presented in the fairy tale in contrast to Marie’s compassion.
