The essay attempts an analysis of M. Butterfly, a play by D. H. Hwang, by comparing it with its screen interpretation in the film by D. Cronen­berg. The issue under consideration is the implicit use of ancient myths in the play, which becomes more evident in the film due to certain cinemato­graphic techniques and to some changes in the script introduced by the au­thor and the director. It will be shown that by being transposed into a dif­ferent medium the play is not distorted but, on the contrary, brought back to its ritualistic roots.

Der Aufsatz versucht eine Analyse des Theaterstücks M. Butterfly von D. H. Hwang anhand eines Vergleichs mit der Filmversion von D . Cronenberg. Es geht dabei um den impliziten Gebrauch alter Mythen im Stück, die in der Filmversion deutlicher erkennbar werden dank bestimmter Filmtechni­ken und einiger Änderungen, die vom Autor und vom Regisseur vorgenom­men wurden. Durch die Überführung in ein anderes Medium wird das Stück nicht verfälscht, sondern im Gegenteil wieder seinen rituellen Wurzeln zu­geführt.
