In this paper I shall place Barfield’s thought in the tradition of British and European cultural and social critics. Within this tradition Barfields ideas about “the role of the imagination in culture and society” have a special place. Here I shall pay special attention to Coleridge’s influence on the shape and direction of Barfield’s thought. In the light of this and other related thinkers Barfield’s work emerges as a modern and constructive contribution to his own time, the twentieth century. Like the predecessors he had chosen as his models, Barfield was not only a theoretician but also a practical thinker who developed a vision of social reform and change. I shall attempt to shed new light on this profound, though largely ignored practicality in Barfield’s work. I shall try to bridge the gap between his theoretical writings, his fictional work and his practical reform ideas. I suggest that all of these aspects of Barfield’s work hang together in many unexpected but exciting ways. Barfield’s life and work spanned almost the whole of the twentieth century. But his ideas and his ideals, together with his vision of a transformation of culture and society are very much alive now, in the twenty-first century. Facing the social challenges of our global economy, his ideas about social and economic reform are, I suggest, of special importance and relevance today.

In meinem Vortrag werde ich Barfield in die Tradition der englischen und europäischen Kultur- und Sozialkritik stellen. Sein Konzept von der “Rolle der Imagination in Kultur und Gesellschaft ” hat innerhalb dieser Tradition einen wichtigen Stellenwert. Ich werde mich hier vor allem auf Barfields Vorbild S. T. Coleridge konzentrieren. Auch andere, ähnliche Denker werden zu Wort kommen. Hierbei soll deutlich werden, dass Barfield nicht nur in einer langen Denktradition steht, sondern dass er auch modern und konstruktiv war, und zwar für sein eigenes Zeitalter; das zwanzigste Jahrhundert. Wie seine gewählten Vorbilder war auch Barfield nicht nur Theoretiker sondern auch praktischer Denker. Er entwickelte eine Vision für eine politische und soziale Reform für seine Zeit. Diese wichtige, praxisorientierte Seite Barfields ist bislang weitgehend ignoriert worden. Aus diesem Grund möchte ich den praktischen Aspekt von Barfields Denken speziell beleuchten. Dabei möchte ich eine Brücke schlagen zwischen seinem theoretischen, seinem literarischem und seinem praxisorientierten Werk. Meine Absicht ist es aufzuzeigen, dass all diese Aspekte von Barfields Werk eng miteinander verknüpft sind, und zwar in einer unerwartet interessanten und spannenden Art und Weise. Barfields Leben und sein Werk erstrecken sich fast über das gesamte zwanzigste Jahrhundert. Seine Ideen und Ideale, zusammen mit seinen praktischen Reformvorschlägen reichen jedoch viel w eiter-und zwar ins einundzwanzigste Jahrhundert hinein. Barfields Konzept zu Wirtschafts und Sozialreformen bietet Ansätze, die heute, in unserer globalisierten Wirtschaftswelt, von einer bisher unerkannten Relevanz sind.
